Rapid cooling of the body after a cardiac arrest seems to improve chances of survival without damaging the victim’s brain, a new study has found.”We now have a method that is safe and can be started within minutes of cardiac arrest to minimise damage during this very critical period,” said study leader Maaret Castren, professor of emergency medicine at the Karolinska Institute, Stockholm. For years, people hospitalised after cardiac arrest have been cooled to reduce damage to the brain and other tissues when blood circulation normalises after being temporarily halted. In the Prince (Pre-Resuscitation Intra-Nasal Cooling Effectiveness) investigation, Castren and colleagues at 14 other centres across Europe used a new tool, RhinoChill, that cools the brain during ongoing cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).

Researchers randomised 200 adults going into witnessed cardiac arrest to receive either standard resuscitation or resuscitation with cooling started as soon as possible during the arrest, with ongoing CPR.All patients who survived until hospitalisation were further cooled according to standard criteria.Eighteen patients were excluded from the analysis because a ?do-not-resuscitate’ order was found or there was a non-cardiac reason for theircardiac arrest. In the 182 patients reported, 83 (average age 66 years, 71 percent male) were randomised to receive nasal cooling (although two were not cooled because of user or device problems) and 99 (average age 64.8, 78 percent male) received standard care.

RhinoChill is a non-invasive device that introduces coolant through nasal prongs. The system is battery-powered and requires no refrigeration, making it suitable for emergency medical technicians to use while a person is receiving CPR.In the total group, 46.7 percent of those cooled survived until hospital discharge, compared with 31 percent of those receiving standard care. And 36.7 percent of those cooled were in good neurological condition on hospital discharge, compared with 21.4 percent of those receiving standard care, said a Karolinska Institute release. In a time analysis, patients who received a combination of early CPR started within six minutes of collapse and cooling had the best outcomes.

Personalised, proactive phone counselling centred on motivational interviewing can help teenagers quit smoking, recent studies suggest.

Arthur V. Peterson and colleagues at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Centre, Seattle, designed a trial to evaluate to what extent phone counselling could help teenagers quit the habit.

Researchers identified more than 2,000 smokers via classroom surveys of juniors in 50 high schools in Washington state.

In 25 of the high schools, after parental approval teen smokers received personalised smoking cessation counselling that combined motivational interviewing and cognitive behavioural skills training.

These included using the smoker’s own words and values to increase the importance of quitting, anticipating and coping with stress and other triggers to smoke, and making plans for stopping.

The study included over 700 non-smokers to ensure that contacting students for participation in the trial would not reveal a participant’s smoking status.

More than a year after the intervention, nearly 89 percent completed a follow-up survey in which 22 percent reported a six-month prolonged abstinence from smoking, compared to 18 percent among students in the no-intervention control arm.

There was also strong evidence that the intervention had made a difference for three months, one month and seven-day abstinence and for the length of time since the last cigarette.

These findings were published online in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute.

People who want to have a healthy skin and hair should focus on the essential fatty acids, they are needed to promote and keep the skin in a healthy condition. Nonetheless, adding more essential fatty acids in correcting the diet doesn’t always work, because the trans-fatty acids could block the essential fatty acids, the other situation is the person may not have abundant vitamins B6 and C or the minerals magnesium and zinc in the diet. Some dermatologists even believe that protein intake is connected to having clear skin. Oil production is limited from an enzyme located within protein. Drinking the real stuff is the best. The kind of green tea that you brew is the best kind. But, if you really don’t like it, the natural green tea drinks will work. A facial skin care programme in a good parlour with regularity also is a effective way to maintain soft skin.

A latest medical research of Boston University School of Medicine (BUSM), stated that , Intakes of fresh fruits and vegetables can reduce the risk of Pregnant women. This study also stated that , consuming fresh fruits and vegetables daily can reduce the risk of developing URTI in pregnant women. URTI is referred to the common cold and cough and it can leads to the low respiratory problems.

The researchers studied more than 1,000 pregnant women and found those who ate the most fruits and vegetables were 26 percent less likely to have URTI relative to those who ate the least amount. It could affect the baby very much. So avoid these problems , pregnant women should intake fresh fruits , juice and fresh vegetables. Pregnant women have been recommended to consume at least five servings of fruits and vegetables per day.

What To Do : If you’re very senstive , avoid candles altogether. But if you love tha smell and want to use at home , buy candles that have few ingredients and feature just one scent . If you have a bad reaction to scented candle , getting some fresh air should make you feel better .

Allergen No 2 Perfume : Fragrance can conatin hundreds of chemicals that are mostly untested on humans . When those chemicals bond with the essiential oils in perfumes and are then sprayed into air , senstive people make offense . Sneezing , congestion , and headaches can be the result .

Wat to Do : Kindly ask your colleagues to go easy on their favorite fragrances .Turn on the fan to keep your area as scant-free as possible . If the thought of not wearing a fragrance leaves your blue, stick with body creams and moisturizes that have light scents . These are less likely to irritate you .

The hundreds of types of meditation share a key features: They all involve keeping your attention on the present moment , often by sitting quietly and focusing on your breath or a mantra. Most common uses stress , high blood pressure , chronic pain , anxienty disorders , headaches , PMS. Since premenstrual woes can be exacerbated by stress , using meditation to reduce tension can help pull a mood out of the dumps , say Dr. Geoffrey Redmond.

In one study oming 15 to 20 minutes twice a day for three minths cut women’s PMS symptoms by more than half. It was a patient who first told Dr.Brain L.Weiss , MD , of her success with meditation; the technique helped her prevent colds and anxiety-induced stomach-aches. So he tried it: “At first it was difficult to remain so focused but once I dropped the concept of needing to progress , I felt great,” says Dr.Weiss , who now runs a holistic medicine centre in Miami. “I even get fewer migrate.” His patients benefit too.

If you’ve tried NSAIDs , aspirin , acetaminophen , and corticosteroid injections for your osteoarthritis (OA) and your doctor thinks that you are experiencing bone-on-bone pain , you finally have one more no-knife treatment choice before considering joint replacement.

Hyaluronic Acid (HA) more famouse for its use in the treatment of wrinkles , is a natural thickening component of synovial joint fluid. The viscous yellow substance lubricates bones and cartilage in the joint. Some , but not all – people OA of the knee have low concentrations of joint HA , making their synovial fluid thinner and less protective.

Research suggests that injecting synthetic HA into painful joints can thicken the joint fluid and help cushion the bones. However patients who received HA injections reported only about the same degree of pain relief as they got from NSAIDS. And HA has no effects on OA prognosis.
