Wireless connection in Vista

All most all laptops have wireless feature integrated with the chip set and most of the laptops have windows vista installed in it. More over Microsoft has stopped XP in the market. How do we connect a vista laptop to a wireless network? That’s simple, vista has an option in its start menu and the option is ‘Connect to’, when we click on to it we can see the available networks in range that a laptop can detect and you can connect to your network. But even if the laptop is connected to the network it might not connect to the internet and the main reason could be the anti virus software installed in the laptop. And one main reason could be the windows firewall on the vista operating system, the only solution is to turn off the windows firewall. Some times when we try to connect to a network we get an error message “no networks found in range or make sure the wireless switch is turned on”. In that case make sure the wireless switch on the laptop is turned on.

Autoconfiguration Private IP Address will be in the range 169.254.x.x or In the range 169.254.0.1-169.254.255.254. Why these ip are used. In general in a established network a device which is DHCP server assigns an ip to the computers connected to it in its network range. If there is a DHCP failure or if there is no DHCP server to assign an ip to the computer, then the operating system in the computer assigns an ip address to the computer in other words the computer assigns an ip address to itself. To make two computers to communicate they must in in same network range and in a network where there is no DHCP server to assign an ip, this APIPA is used so that the computers communicate with each other.

Basic network troubleshooting

Basic steps which can be followed when a networking device fails to function are simple. At the most these steps will solve the hardware issue and some static power issues. The first step is power cycle, nothing but restarting the device in other words turning the device off and turning back on. The next step would be unplug and replug the physical links, Unplugging the data cables and replugging it so as to make sure the physical connection is established properly. The last and the most effective step would be common for almost all hardware devices, Reset. Reseting the device clears all the settings or the data on the device and refreshes it to the default state. These three steps form the basic and the foremost important tries that can be made to fix an issue with any kind of a networking device.

Configuring Networking Devices

In general networking products such as modems, routers, access points can be configured by opening their interface. To open the interface first we must know the IP address of the device. To find that check the IP address of the computer connected to the device. That computer will have an IP address, subnet mask and default gateway. The default gateway would be the IP address of the device. Type this IP address in the internet browser of that computer and it will open the utility or the interface of the networking device and go ahead in configuring it.

There are a number of network device manufacturers like Cisco, Belkin, Netgear. Here we have the Netgear’s one of the best products ever. We may have a laptop but it might not have a wireless capability or we want to make our wired desktop as a wireless computer, to establish a wireless network there are some hardware requirements like modem or a wireless modem, router and to make the computer a part of the wireless network we need a wireless adapter or  network card, if not so we may go for a wireless USB adapter which is tiny and looks like a flash memory. Among the USB adapters available in the market Netgear’s  WG 111 wireless-G USB adapter is one of the best. The installation of this device is much easy and it has a good wireless coverage range. This device can also be installed in laptops and small handy computing devices to connect to a hotspot network. In shopping malls and airports hotspots or wireless internet access is available and with the help of this device we can make our laptop or notebook to connect to the network and access internet.

Router is a device that connects two different networks. It translates one network IP address to a different network IP address. It translates public IP address to private and vise verse, translates private IP address to private and public to public. Thus it plays a vital part in sharing internet connection. It can translate a single public IP address to a pool of private IP addresses and vice verse. Routers do have a DHCP server, NAT translator and inbuilt firewall. It can also be used as a switch and can do what a switch or a hub cannot. Hence it is termed as intellectual device. There are two types of routers based on their connectivity, wired and wireless. There are different types of routers based on their range of usage, and works in different modes such as NAT mode, bridge mode, etc. They also work as an access point and a range extender in wireless networks. Basic function of router is to route the packets to the appropriate client or server in a network.

Modem

The basic devices needed to establish an internet are computer and modem. What does a modem do?
To connect to the internet the computer should have an Ip address, to communicate with a server or a network the system sends a request and the server on the internet acknowledges and establishes the connection or communication. The computer understands only digital signals but the signals transmitted are of analog. Thus to translate digital signals to analog a device is needed. Similarly the computer communicates in digital codes, in order to send or transmit those signals as analog signals a device is used. Modem[modulator and demodulator] does both modulation and demodulation and it serves this purpose. There are different types of modem depending on the type of internet connection and functionality. Some examples are cable modem, DSL modem, NAT modem, Bridge modem, etc.

These errors are associated mostly will be associated with driver file name. To check which driver is oriented with the file name log into support.microsoft.com in a different computer and enter the file name in the search option. You will get the device or the hardware associated with the file name. Try to get into safe mode and unistall the driver for the particular device in the device manager and after doing the computer will get into desktop in normal mode.
